If you are visiting Istanbul for the first time, the easiest way to move between the main historical attractions is the Istanbul Tram T1 Line.
This tram line connects many of the city’s most important areas, including Sultanahmet, Eminonu, and Karakoy.
If you understand how the system works, you can explore most of the historic peninsula without taxis or expensive tours.
This guide explains everything step by step.
Step 1 — Get an Istanbulkart
Before using the tram, you need a transport card called the Istanbulkart.
You can buy it at:
- yellow ticket machines at tram stations
- kiosks near major stations
- convenience shops around tourist areas
Typical price structure:
- card fee: about $ 3.75 (March 2026)
- you add credit afterward
One card can be used for:
- tram
- metro
- buses
- ferries
Step 2 — Find the Nearest T1 Tram Station
The Istanbul Tram T1 Line runs from Bagcilar to Kabatas.
Tourists usually use these stops:
- Sultanahmet Tram Stop
- Gulhane Tram Stop
- Eminonu Tram Stop
- Karakoy Tram Stop
Most hotels in the old city are within walking distance of these stops.
Step 3 — Enter the Station
Tram stations in Istanbul are simple.
- Walk to the platform.
- Tap your Istanbulkart on the yellow reader.
- The gate will open.
The system automatically deducts the fare.
You do not need to buy a ticket every time if you already have credit on your card.
Step 4 — Check the Direction
Trams run in two directions:
Towards Kabataş
Stops include:
- Sultanahmet
- Eminonu
- Karakoy
- Kabatas
Towards Bağcılar
This direction goes deeper into the city.
Tourists rarely need this direction unless going to malls or residential districts.
Step 5 — Board the Tram
Trams usually arrive every 3–5 minutes in busy areas.
When the tram arrives:
- wait for passengers to exit
- enter through any door
- stand or sit
There are electronic screens showing the next stop.
Announcements are usually in Turkish and English.
Step 6 — Exit at Your Stop
When your stop appears on the screen:
- move toward the door
- press the button if necessary
- exit when the doors open
You do not tap your card when exiting the tram.
